Water and environmental permit decisions may contain permit conditions that require water and fisheries monitoring. The monitoring must then be carried out in a manner approved by the relevant authority. In addition to studies related to permit processes, the core business area of Fish and Water Research Ltd. is also the obligatory monitoring of water construction and operational activities. Whether it is water construction or monitoring of obligations related to fishways at hydroelectric power plants, we offer the necessary methods to meet obligations in an authority-approved manner. When the entire process from drafting the monitoring program and authority negotiations to implementing the monitoring is in the hands of our expert team, the operator can focus on their main activities.

Fisheries and Benthic Fauna Monitoring of the Vantaanjoki Watershed
Kala- ja vesitutkimus Oy has been conducting the fisheries and benthic fauna monitoring part of the Vantaanjoki joint monitoring coordinated by the Water Protection Association of the River Vantaa and Helsinki Region since 2014.
The monitoring includes annual electrofishing surveys that assess the state of the fish species in the rapids above and below the discharge points. A comprehensive benthic fauna survey is conducted every three years to track the impact of pollution on the benthic fauna of the river’s rapids and backwaters.
The monitoring of the Vantaanjoki also follows the state of the river’s crayfish populations, the levels of harmful substances in fish, and the taste defects found in fish. Recreational fishing and its catch in the Vantaanjoki watershed are monitored through surveys conducted among anglers. A summary report, published every three years, uses statistical methods to examine potential changes in the fish and benthic fauna in the river.
Kala- ja vesitutkimus Oy has also been selected to carry out the monitoring for the years 2024–2026.
